2nd Chiltons also calls out RTV silicone sealant in the text but on the diagram they call out Aviation Permatex #3 to be applied to the top and bottom middle bolts.

More choices...

Edit: I read the back of Permatex #2. Also says for threaded applications. If you have the #3 Aviation I'd use that. But #2 will probably work fine too. Or the one that was posted with the diagram.

Now that I read the last few posts, I don't recall if I used RTV or Permatex on the bolts. I know I coated the bolts though. 🤔

Top and bottom center two bolts need to be coated or oil will leak. Permatex #3 works fine but I recently switched to Gasoila for all my thread sealing needs.

I got the pump replaced today everything went well, except that when I shut the truck off the fan nut untreaded it's self a little. I used threadlock on it and tightened it down pretty good. Should I just tighten it as hard as I can or will I break something?

more thread lock, tighten it down, and let it sit for a bit to let the thread lock dry.

Shouldn't need any Loc-Tite, but the orange or blue stuff works fine. No need for red Loc-tite in my opinion. I've never used loc-tite on the fan and never had an issue.

I didn't use loctite on my fan. I recall needing a large pair of channel locks to grab the big nut and I snugged it up good and tight. I don't have a torque value for you but I'm pretty sure I got it over 50 ft lbs. I don't recall any worry about breaking anything except maybe my knuckles. Thread locker as long as it's not the permanent type can't hurt.

I used a pipe wrench with a piece of pipe over the handle for leverage. So not sure what the torque was. I'll just get it as tight as I can and hope for the best. -Thanks

Well, I drove the truck today and it still leaks from the gasket. I used Permatex no. 2 on both sides of the gasket before installing and torqued the bolts to 15 ft lbs. Can I just tighten the bolt more to try to get a better seal or put Permatex no. 2 on the outside where it leaks? if I have to take the pump off again I will, but don't wont to if there is something else I can try.

Permatex #2 on the outside is no help. It's a gasket dressing. I would re tighten the bolts. Start at the bolt nearest the leak. And work around each side from there alternating. Then as a check do a second tightening starting at the middle bolts and work your way to the ends in an alternating crossing pattern. Good luck. I've never had a gasket leak with Permatex #2 both sides of the gasket and the mating surfaces.

Where on the waterpump is the leak? Near one of the middle bolts?

Do you mean go over them with the torque wrench again, loosen them and torque them or just tighten them more than they are? Maybe I didn't let gasket maker set up long enough and that is why it is leaking?

You could try gently tightening bolts a hair more to see if it will seal. Permatex No 3 is what I used along with High-Tack on the pump side of the gasket. The only time I've had a water pump leak at the gasket was when I used too much RTV on the block side of the gasket. Personally I really like High-Tack as it helps hold the gasket in place during assembly.
Are the mating surfaces perfectly clean with no gouges?

Yes, retorque them to the spec. Depending on how you went through the bolts one that was seemingly torqued may not have been fully seated. So when you proceeded to other bolts it could have become less tight. Recheck them all. If it still leaks after that you'll have to remove it and start over. I use a thin coat both sides of the gasket and both mating surfaces. The mating surfaces have to be clean and smooth. You don't want to scratch up mating surfaces when cleaning up. If you use metal scrapers be extra careful. Plastic scrapers are safer to use. I don't wait for a set up. As soon as I have the Permatex on the gasket and the mating surfaces I put it together. Tighten up the bolts evenly first then torque in a pattern that promotes even tightening. You don't want to start torquing on one side and go to the other side. Best to start in the middle and work your way out evenly in a crossing pattern. The idea is to bring the mating surfaces up together and evenly.
