Second time in a few years for this on my 86: When I shut off the motor, the pressure in the fuel rail goes away immediately instead of holding some residual pressure. Makes for a hard start. I know it could be the fuel pressure regulator or the backflow check valve in the electric pump. Both were replaced with AutoZone parts 2-3 years ago. Before I pull the pump and get the traditional gasoline bath, can anyone think of other items that could cause this instant loss of fuel pressure? It's too quick to be a leaky injector. No visible leaks or smell of gas present.
I would vote for it being your fuel pump, even though you replaced it. Have you been replacing the fuel filter? If the filter is clogged, you could be putting backpressure on the pump, and blowing out the check valve.
A bunch of guys on this forum maintain AutoZone sells less than shall we say premium parts. They do however offer lifetime warranties which I am sure will make you feel better as you crawl under the truck and take your gasoline bath. I took their advice and bought a NAPA pump when I did my in tank setup a few months ago. So far so good.
It went away by itself. I kinda suspect the Autozone pump though. Definitely not an exact replacement part. If the pump goes out again I'll go to NAPA and forget the autozone lifetime warranty. I'd rather have a good part up front than a great guarantee on a not so good part.
