Where we live in the coastal mountains, nothing seems to rust. We are about 10 miles from the ocean. We get ocean fog, but I don't think it ever has salt in it, or at least not enough to make it an issue. We do get snow up here, but CalTrans only uses sand on the roads because it melts by itself the same day, or worst case a couple of days.

Our nephew lives in San Francisco 2 blocks from the ocean, and a lot of vehicles in his neighborhood get rusty. Metal patio furniture also rusts.
