The chrome tip on my 7.3 Tremor isn't looking that great. Never understood why there's a chrome tip on an otherwise non chromed truck anyway.
Not sure whether to remove, wire wheel the thing and try some high temp flat black or look for a new black tip of some sort.
Has anyone else painted or swapped these out for new on a 7.3 gasser?
They make a black one. My350 didn’t have a tip and the pipe was scraped on the end so I installed the ford chrome like you have. So far it is holding up but it does rattle a bit. Like a ringing bell I can barely hear. It’s irritating.
I had to tighten it to a specific torque when installing. If you take it off I don’t know if that changes anything or if you tighten it back to the original torque.
I had a black banks tip on my 150 banks cat-back exhaust and it was always muddy as well. I can’t/don’t keep mine clean so they don’t look that great anyway.
Looks like that chrome tip is for looks only and just bolts over the pipe. If possible, unbolt the cover, clean up the exhaust pipe and spray three feet of it or so with some high-temp flat black Rust-Oleum and call it good.

I agree. It only slides over the tailpipe and is secured by a clamp that looks like muffler clamps I've seen on Harleys. I might just remove it, scuff up the chrome and remove the rust the best I can with wire wheel on the bench grinder and blast it with some high temp flat black. The quick and dirty way out.
I don't get why they put a chrome exhaust tip on a Tremor that has no chrome anywhere else. A quick search shows that the tip was part of the Sport Appearance package, which this truck has for some reason.

I had to loosen mine up and fix it, as it was installed a little crooked from the factory. Mine is holding up well, and it looks fine to me...better than the bare pipe that was on my 2018 IMO (similar to the picture posted above).
If the chrome isn't holding up well, I doubt black paint would do any better. But it's worth a shot, because you can always just take it off.

You’re probably right. But it’s quick & cheap and I think I might have a rattle can of high temp paint hanging around.
If it doesn’t work out I’ll have to shop for a better aftermarket solution.
I bit the bullet and ordered a new black tip. The old one is off, has been cleaned up on the wire wheel and is in the house letting the metal warm up overnight.
I'll probably hit it with some black high temp paint and keep it around for a spare if some other use for it doesn't pop up.
