2005 e150 5.4l

I have a loud humming sound from rear axle maybe. Any tips for alleviating this is appreciated. It has spent significant time above the mason/dixon line before I got it and has been afflicted by the northern blight on the under-carriage. The rest of the 85k mile vehicle is stellar. Thanks, Bill

Bad axle bearing or something's unhappy in the diff. Have you checked diff fluid level? What's the axle code in the build tag in the driver door jamb? Does it have a single piece shaft between the transmission and rear axle or is it two sections supported in the middle?

Inspect rear tires.

Rotate tires back-to-front and see if that makes any difference.

How old are the tires?

I have an 04 E150 5.4 with same axle code H9. 9.75 limited slip. Likely same for yours. AFAIK all E150 thru E350 with van bodies (not cab/chassis or cutaways) have single piece driveshaft. Can be steel or aluminum depending on length.

I'd put the rear axle on jackstands and run it up after checking the u joints and carrier bearing
Sure, could be a bearing inside the rear end
With only 85k on it, your bearings should be fine, same with the carrier bearing if it's a 2 piece rear shaft
However, water intrusion into the rear axle will ruin the bearings pretty quick
So, I'd also pull the rear coverplate and check the condition of the gear oil
