My 1996 F250 5.8l 5 speed doesn't have a factory tach and I'd like to add one. I'm reading that the guages don't matter on the year but the tach does matter. Saying I'd need to find a '96-97 model cluster or swap the pinout connections. I'm getting conflicting stories on this, has anyone that's done the swap confirm? I'm finding plenty of '92-94 tach but no '96-97. Also has anyone added an aftermarket tach and if so were did you put it.
I swapped a factory tach into my '92. You need a tach from a 96-97 with a gasoline motor. If you want to go aftermarket they make pods that can go on the A pillar, or on top of the column that will accept 2 1/16" gauge diameters.
Thanks for the reply. I was afraid I'd need a 96-97 but just can't find one. I did some searching and found that Max Tow and Glow Shift offer some gauge pod setups fairly reasonable. I may go that route and do Tach, Temp, and Oil psi gauges.

you need the whole cluster. You can not just add a factory tachometer to a non tachometer cluster in these trucks. You need one from a 1996/1997 unless you want to change the pinout. It needs to be from a gasser.

If you decide to add the extra gauges I added a triple pod under the center dash. Made an adapter out of flat stock alloy and used the trim screws to mount it.
