Headlight Restore

My 2016 head light where starting to yellow some and nighttime lighting was just horrible. This morning I figured to try a restore kit and this one seemed to get good reviews/ results.

Here are some before, during and after. The after is deceiving because it looks more yellow but it's the sun hitting them. There is still a little discoloration on the upper driverside which is inside the plastic I believe. Tonight we'll see if its better. Maybe it's time to replace the bulbs also? It's been 10 years, some new Sylvania Ultra Silver Stars are in order.

During the process.

Took the grille off to get to the headlights. Removed the 4 10mm screws holding the light assembly on. Changed the bulbs to some Sylvania ultras. 30 minute job.

Good job Rat... I used a cheap turtle Wax kit on my 3rd brake light. Worked pretty good. I had to replace my original driver's side headlight, did a thread on it in the 6.7 section, after I accidently got brake cleaner on it and it cracked the plastic. Still kept the original but my buddy found me a cheap used OEM set of headlight assemblies on FB marketplace. I have to clean the driver's side up with a kit and will do the other one as well. I also want to put protective film over mine as well.

It's not perfect and I probably could of done a better sanding with the 2000 & 3000 grit discs. In the dark now though a world of difference. New bulbs probably didn't hurt either.

IMHO sanding with a more aggressive grit (like 150) as the first step , then stepping up to 200, then 400, then going to whatever sandpaper the kit has both saves time and gets better results. I've restored the factory headlights on all my old vehicles mostly because all the aftermarket Chinese headlight assemblies are junk.

Here's an example of one that I started on with 150 grit sandpaper on an dual action power sander, before going with the kits included drill attachment thing and finer grit sandpaper. The aggressive sandpaper at the beginning gets rid of all the oxidation and flattens the surface such that it'll take a better polish.

During

And after

Just remember to re-apply the clear coat every year to keep them looking good. I make it a point that every time I renew the registration that I re-clear the headlight (I just use one of those most towelette looking packages with a wipe inside, bought a big box of 3M made ones of Amazon for cheap years ago).

Here's another example of starting off with 150 grit and only using power tools for the whole process ( power tools,,, because Merica). IMHO the instructions that have people start off with 1000 grit is just silly.

Side note after replacing the bulbs yesterday with removing the headlight assembly I would take the whole assembly out and restore them out of the truck.
