AXLE CODE HELP

I am trying to figure out what axle ratio is in my truck but using the decoder I cannot find mine...It is listed as H4J...but under the H4 grid in the decoder I am using it doesn't have an axle for a 1978

The truck is a 1978 F100 Explorer if I am reading the Body tag part correctly...although I "thought" when I first got the truck the badge on the side said custome but I cannot remember and don;t have the badges anymore.

This is the decoder I am using 1973-1979 Ford Truck VIN Tag Codes (Rear Axle) - FORDification.net

I have attached the tag for my truck..Any help is appreciated

After doing more research I guess the J means the truck came with power steering

But I am still confused on the 4 part since on the decoder there is no 1978 listing for the "4" row

I am really just tryin to figure out my gear ratio and I also am curious what spline the (' for that year/model would have

Have you looked at the tag on the rear itself? Might be under many years of sludge, but that will be the most accurate way to know.

So 78 F100, should be a common 1/2 ton, 5 lug 9" rear axle. X2 have you looked at the axle itself? There should be a tag/plate held on by 1 or 2 nuts that hold the center section in place. See the attached pic. Worse case you can to the jack it up and mark the tire, then rotate the tire count the d/s revoulations to get real close to the ratio. Other wise have to pull the axles and then the center section and see what is stamped on the ring gear.

H4 '74-'75 3.25 ratio, 3.6M capacity Ford Limited Slip
'76 3.25 ratio, 3.75M capacity Ford Limited Slip

Yes J is the code for front axle w/power steering.
