Early signs would be excessive wandering and bump steer. If they are bad enough you will probably have some suspension noise like clunking. Easy way is take a big pry bar and stick it between the frame and the bar to see if it has too much movement. It shouldn't really move at all. Best way is to have it on an alignment rack and check the castor of the axle and see if it has any "steer" built in. What I mean by that is does one wheel sit further back than the other.
