Hello everyone. Sorry for the non-cool user name. Perhaps in the future, I'll spend some time on that and come up with something like Lightning409 ... Anyway, I'm thinking about buying a high-mileage '97 explorer AWD and wondered if anyone had any feedback. It has 133000 miles.
I'm wondering how reliable and effective the AWD is. Also wondering about overall reliability and performance. This one has the V6. I already know about the gas mileage and don't really care. I may try to learn about some of the chips that are available and see if I can improve the gas mileage that way.
Like any used vehicle, I would make sure to to really check the vehicle over well and make sure there are not any problems that could cost you a lot of extra money. As far as the Explorer is concerned, I would recommend getting one. I have actually been thinking about buying an AWD (mine is 2wd) to have for a winter vehicle. 133K miles is not that bad, depending on how the maintenance was done. As long as it has been kept up, you should have plenty of good miles left...
My 97 Mountaineer has 90,000 miles on it with no problems with AWD transfer case. If the seller has the maintainence records it should have had the transfer case fluid changed about every 30,000 miles. It uses automatic transmission fluid and is very easy to change.

If you already owned the truck and know what it's history is, then 133k is not that high. but i would not buy a truck with that milage unless you have the cash to start replacing big ticket items. I would look for a 1996 with lower miles for the same price. remmember, these are trucks that experience greater forces and strains that cars do not. they just wear out quicker especially if they are not taken care of. that's the big variable here.
