gas gauge problem

gas gauge problem

i am sure this has been asked before but, I have dual tanks on my 88 F250. the gauge when on the front tank works great, but when i switch over to the rear tank it freaks out. bounces from empty to full???? any thoughts???????

I think everybody who has one of these trucks has gas guage problems. You would think Ford would be able to put a reliable gas guage in. My rear tank guage has not worked for about 10 years. When I run on that tank I keep up with my mileage. After I go 200 miles I fill up. If my pumps ever go I will replace both guages. Hopefully Ford will have something reliable by that time.

Yeah, the float/potentiometer assembly on the sending unit on the tank is broken, probably the little springy metal finger that slides along the circuit board has lost its spring or the circuit board is shot. You'll have to drop the tank to find out and if your truck is old expect to break parts like the collar. The collar and gasket can be had at Napa for only a couple of bucks. It's not that hard to drop the tank but I had to drill out the four bolts for the straps and use new ones.

yeah dropping the tank is allot of fun. I have dropped one on the 86 f150 I had. filthy job, but someone has to do it.
