I decided to straighten up my work bench and knocked over a can of spray paint in between a wall and a half wall, of course in landed perfect and was spraying, just figured it would spray itself out. Well just as it stopped, woosh! the wall is on fire, the water heater flame is only about 5 feet from where the wall was. By the time I run up stairs, grab the fire extinguisher and go back down the fire was bad. I got it out, with the help with a couple of buckets of water. man it was scary, I was thinking to call 911 and just save the animals but the house would have been gone by the time they got there (street is frozen solid and live on a hill). The dog is just watching me from the top of the steps with this dumb look on this face while the whole house is full of smoke. My hand is a little banged up from punching the wall to get access, but other than a few things that got burnt besides the walls and studs everything is ok, Thank God.
That shows how dangerous houses really are. I am glad you managed to react in a way that did not do you any damage, and also promptly enough to stop the destruction of your home.. You should speak sharply to your dog though. Standing on stairways with dumb looks on their faces is not what mutts should do.
Getting rid of the smoke smell will be all but impossible in some things. If you are claiming on insurance, check all the beds, for smoke, and get them either steam cleaned (insurance usually adds it in to the claim if you ask 'em) or replaced. The by products of smoke can make for an unhealthy few months, if breathed in nightly when sleeping. Same with clothes, clean 'em or sling 'em. The carpets need steaming too, if the smoke was around for any time..
Sorry to hear that.
I caught my house on fire (on the outside) a while back
no damage done, but it sure made a heck of a flame
If I woudln'tve had moms drapes, I would have had the whole house burn. Funny what you grab in a panic.
Will the house be easy to repair?
If you've got a work bench anywhere in the house even in the garage a fire extinguisher right there is mandatory. Also think about a metal cabinet with a lock to store spray cans in out of sight where they can't get near a flame source.
I'm thankful you got it put out and right here at the holidays or anytime for that matter it would have been sad to hear about someone loosing their home and contents let alone burns or worse.
It was actually a blessing in disguise, The wife said I can take the finished part of the basement as my new work area away from water heater (much more space). As far as damage, I ripped out the burnt paneling and I'm going to replace 2 studs, (non-bearing wall exposed on other side of paneling) just so if we ever sell the house you don't see burnt wood. I'm glad to see everyone considering adding or buying more extinguishers.
Believe me I going to.
Speak of the devil. I just started another fire
I turned on the stove, put oil in it to cook fries, came in here, 5 minutes later, I went back in there and the oil was flaming
Im not sure why it caught on fire but it did. i inhaled a lot of smoke getting the pan outside after I covered it.
it finally went out but I had to put it out with water
after it spilt on some leafs.
Coda, so glad it wasnt worse than what it was, and that u was able to get it out asap. Get two extinguishers in the work areas, one on the entrance wall and one on the opposite wall.
As far as inhaling smoke, u will cough alot. One thing that they taught us at the fire academy for when u inhale smoke is to eat ice cream. I dunno how it works, but it absorbs the smoke that u inhaled.

That is the best excuse I have ever heard for eating ice cream I shall have to get a stock in, just in case..
haha Good one theo
how much smoke does it take to harm you?
I inhaled quite a bit, was coughin for a good 30 minutes, eyes watering and though i was going to pass out
I feel almost ok now
Plus, that icecream gets old after a while, so you wouldn't want to waste it, so you'd need to eat it. and then restock
First thing I did after it was over was opened all the windows, then I grabbed a beer and went outside with the dog. cat was probably sleeping somewhere as usual. I was coughing alot while it was happening because after using the fire extinguisher the fire still wasn't out. so besides inhaling the smoke I also inhaled the chemical. I just had a shirt wrapped around my face.
Spit out some mean luggies when I went outside.
Me 2, I coughed up some terrible luggies
I wanted a beer but I drank them all last nite
Maybe we'll be ok tho Coda
If not... we'll be in the hospital together. fiting over the PC to check FTE
