I'm still in the process of breaking in my rebuilt 239 in my 55 F 100. I have noticed an oil leak coming from the oil pump. I made sure the inlet tube nut was tight on both ends but that wasn't the source. After driving about 20 miles I could see the pump was wet and dripping oil. It was most likely spitting oils as well during the drive. I say this because there was oils on the front of the pan and the springs..
So before I start working on the pump, I was wondering if this is typical of a Y block, or maybe just gaskets need to be replaced. Also are there any "look outs" I need to be aware of while repairing the oil pump
Hopefully just the pump not sealing properly at one of the pumps mating surfaces or pickup tube?
If that were to prove not to be the fix, things worth considering might be; what is the actual oil pressure of the motor with a reliable gauge? If oil pressure was found to be extremely high, maybe that external pump is a weak link with what is otherwise a correctly sealed pump.
Big oil pressure numbers could come about due to a stuck oil pump relief valve or build clearances too tight?
My oil pressure will vary between 20-70 psi on my dash gauge. I assumed that was normal depending on the amount of demand from the engine speed. I'll see around 70 psi at 55 MPH and lower around 30 MPH and 20 psi at idle. I doubled checked all the bolts to the block and the cover plate today.. I'll take her out for a drive tomorrow and see what happens. If it still leaks I'll probably end up finding a rebuild kit with new gaskets.
If you do pull it off, you could take the opportunity to swap the older gear type pump that you probably have for the later gerotor style. You can find them still, and it's a superior design with less tendency to cavitate and is quieter. There is only a base gasket and the tube seal and washer on either one. I do love spending other peoples money!
