On my 78 Bronco, I had to get the whole cluster loose by taking the trim off around it so that is was just the steel dash, there were screws that held in to the sheet metal I believe, You have to get those undone first.

Oh, but one important step, go to you transmission or transfer case first (whether you have 2 or 4 wheel drive) and there should be a little bolt, I think its about 1/4 inch, that you have to undo, and pull the little gear out. Put the bolt in a safe place :P

This way when you get the dash unscrewed, you can hold the cable and pull it so that you can have some slack so you can have easy access to the back of the instrument cluster. On mine, there was once again, two bolts (one on top, other on bottom) that screwed into the plastic. Once again, I think they were somewhere around 1/4 inch. Undo those and it should just pull off. Thats how mine came that is;-)

Good luck, have fun!

Bad,
The speedo cable has a plastic sleeve that slides up over the speedo gage connector. There is a hook on this plastic sleeve. If you squeeze the plastic sleeve, correctly, the cable will disconnect. I usually unfasten the IP and pull it out a little and sneak my hand in behind. Sometimes its easy, sometimes its not.

That is correct. Just squeeze the little tab on the plastic sleeve and it will release it. Looking at it you would think that you need to pry it away from the sleeve but you don't. It has to be squeezed.
