Has anyone put a 460 in a 1978 with a 5 speed? I know newer fords could be ordered with a 460 and a 5 speed, I have a 1978 s/c 4x4 with a 400 that I have found out I can drop a 460 in, thanks to this site, however I didn't know if a newer 5 speed would bolt in or not? Has anyone completed this ?
As long as the transmission bellhousing is a big block bolt pattern, it will bolt up the any 460, as they are all the same. As to dropping a five speed into a 70's pickup, I have seen the idea thrown around many many times, but I have never seen it actually done.
The mounts for the transmission don't exhist. You could probably get the mounts to the vehicle that the transmission originally came out of, if you have any metal fabrication skills, im sure that you could cook something up to make it work. Also you would need to make sure that the transmission had the correct tailshaft to bolt to your NP205 or NP203. Unless you wanted to use a newer transfer case with your five speed set-up as well.
I also believe that the clutch on the newer transmissions were hydraulic clutches, so once again, if you have an understanding of mechanics and good fabrication skills, you could surely set it up to work. It would probably be a bit of work, but all in all, I personally don't think it would be a bad swap to consider.
