so i recently had to replace my emergency brake shoes (pads fell off 2 of the shoes). i adjusted the brakes to be tight. i drove about 3oo miles and the shoes were loose and wouldn't hold truck. i took the drums off and adjusted the wheel to tighten the shows up. a tank of fuel later the shoes are loose again.....
when i had everything apart i cleaned the adjusters of rust and sprayed them with wd40 to operate easily. i can't seem to figure out how they are unwinding themselves........
like rotate them end for end ?
here is a real dumb question/thought. i didnt even take notice as i didnt think it mattered. i guess i will have to look for a diagram and then open them back up and see....... interesting thought

I don't know if they can be reversed on the backing plate.
I was thinking some older adjusters were opposite threads.
I was suggesting you had the driver side on the passenger and reversed.
oh- i understand.
no i did 1 at a time so i could reference the complete system if a question arose-
i am searching and a post said they might be self adjusting and to back up a couple times hitting the brakes and set the emergency brake a couple times....... this doesnt seem to be it either as it was set tight.........
so i adjusted them tight to hold the truck (empty on a slope). the pedal only depressed half the way down and the brakes were set.
after driving a bit the pedal goes almost the whole way down and the truck isnt held on the slope and in neutral.
so not to be difficult but do i need to keep setting the brake and releasing it over and over for the self-adjusting to work? maybe i had it too tight and it self-adjusted to loose?
Self adjusting only snugs them up, does not back off if too tight.
And, yes, repeated application of the parking brake pedal should tighten it up if the self adjuster mechanism is operating properly.
The self adjusting screw must be backing off, like the arm that engages the adjuster wheel is not holding it.
hmmm
i need to find a diagram of what this is supposed to look like put together. i dont remember an "arm" against the wheel. that makes sense though and is likely the case
The adjustment wheel goes towards the back, and the lower spring rides against the wheel cogs to keep it from turning easily. That's how it's been in the past but maybe 2017's have a different design.

I never could find a diagram of the parking brake for anything later than about 2016.
I did see the one with the spring riding against the adjuster wheel.
But, there does need to be something that keeps the adjuster wheel from moving on its own.
it appears i am just an idiot.
the driver side had the adjustment wheel towards the back but the passenger side had the wheel to the front.
i switched it around and adjusted the brakes again.
hopefully this is all......
