Just got the shock of my life on my 2020 F250 Tremor. I knew it was going to cost more than I thought....both tail lights were cracked at some point so they had allowed water to enter. Just got quoted $8800 from the dealer to replace both tail light assemblies, integrated blind spot modules, and programming and calibration. I guess almost everything electrical and sensor related runs through these tail lights. Anyone else had this sort of sticker shock?
Not really surprised they cost that much, they've put a lot of sensors into the tail lights because they're sealed and it protects the sensors better than putting them in the bumper. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if the backup alarms get moved their eventually.
Did the lights get hit by something? Can you prove that they were damaged accidentally? If so, your comprehensive insurance should cover it (safety related thing), yeah it's a claim and your rates MAY go up a little but it's better than getting that big bill all at once.
Yeah, my best guess is that someone hit them when I was parked at the airport a few weeks back, I just didn't see they were cracked til I took it to the dealer, and Florida gets a bit of rain this time of year so must have filled w water. I submitted a claim as soon as I got the $8800 estimate! Well see
Thats too much, they are padding that like hell which dealer shops will do. They are expensive but that’s crazy. 2020 isn’t even the latest design. Half that estimate is too much. I’m assuming yours are LED. It’s true taillights have basically become another module and any break in communication in the “loop” will cause other issues. Broken taillights are a pretty common culprit if issues. The BLIS modules can be swapped and may not even need calibration. If they do that’s a 30 minute labor charge and it won’t take that long.
If your deductible is less than a grand and you don’t mind filing a claim go for it. You can go used or aftermarket and do most of that job yourself. Or get a second opinion from an independent shop. Not sure what the new ones cost from ford now but it used to be $1500-2k. I know everything has gone up.
Something is wrong. Looking at the tail lights online, they can be had for $1200 each with the sensors. I dont know which style you have, so here is an example: White bear lake ford

It will depend on what all options he has, for instance if he has the LED tails that'll significantly drive up the cost of them. No real way to tell for sure without pictures of them.
That said, it DOES sound like this particular dealer is gouging, even if each assembly was $2k, I can't see labor making up another $4800 for something that should take half a day or less.
I had an insurance estimate in February of this year for box sides, tailgate, and a LED tail light on my 2017 Platinum. The LED tail light with the BLIS sensor was quoted at $1524 for the light and 0.4hrs labor to install it.

For $800 you would make a claim in this day and age? Insurance companies would gladly add a claim to your Lexus Nexus report and they will likely all work together and raise your future premiums many times more than the payout.

Hard pass for me.
Another hard pass for me.
Just making a CALL about maybe making a claim (maybe with zero payout) gets logged in my experience. Never use insurance unless its a big event....imo.
