2000 F-250 7.3L PSD 4X4 Lariat. Here's the problem: With my foot on the brakes and at a full stop, the steering is very hard to turn. Like it's binding up or something.
When the brake pedal is released the power comes back to the steering. Took it to my dealer and they said it was the pump of course. Replaced the pump....same problem. This only occurs when the brake is applied firmly and sitting still. Everything is fine when the truck is in motion. No brake or steering problem at all.
The dealers mechanic is puzzled and so am I. It's not a big deal but it does concern me. Can anyone advise me on this issue?
All comments and ideas are welcome.
I posted this thread a week ago in the Super Duty/Heavy Duty section and got a good response...here is that response.
Yeah, they are all like that from what I have experienced. Combo of vacuum pressure down when on the brakes and big tires with a lot of weight on them. Steering pump can't push enough.
I have a V10 with 35s that does the exact same thing. I also asked here when I first noticed it. Father in-law has 7.3 PS with stocks that does it also.
Now that made me feel better but after thinking about it for a while....I just don't buy it. I can't imagine this being normal for a truck like the F-250....seems to me like maybe there is some kind of restriction somewhere between the power steering pump and the power brake unit. After all, they both work together using the same vacuum pressure.
Does anyone else have any ideas or input? Any response is appreciated.
Well first of all your truck dosent have vacume assisted brakes. It uses the power steering pump to assist the brakes and steering. There is no vacume involved. We have 4 99-up super dutys at work and they all do it. I think it is a combination of the pump being to small for the demand, and the fact that the engine usually isn't turning a lot of rpm's when you are using the brakes and turning. my ford dealer told me that they were going to come out with a fix for it, but they havent yet(that I know of). If anyone else has any info please chime in, but as far as I know its just a bad design by Ford.
Interesting enough as I have a similar condition, but hasn't really bothered me as I'm normally moving along the road. I did not realize that the PB were dependent on the PS pump. I have an '01 PSD and was curious about the slow response of the steering when sitting still, brakes applied.
I really don't have a problem with the condition, but it's good to know what causes it. That's why I like this forum, there are some very intelligent people in here. An educated answer for just about anything, concerning these vehicles.
WOW....fast response, and very good info might I add...Thanks to all for your input. And no it's not really a big deal, just needed to hear more opinions from you guys.....Thanks Again
