After finding the noise was common to all the engines I have heard I figured it was either solonoids/electronics related to the injectors or noisy rockers/valves. Your theory seems to fit. I wish I new more about how these new engines have changed.
Why would injectors make more noise in this new engine? Maybe I don't understand the design either. I have heard injector noise - my old 1985 F-150, yes one of the first 302 fuel-injected trucks - eventually clicked some and it was loud enough to hear inside the uninsulated cab. But, it took a while - don't remember noticing it until it was well over 100,000 miles. My 1999 F-150 with 5.4 makes no injector noise at 60,000 miles. Wondering what would be the design difference that could account for this noise problem on brand new trucks? Somehow, I don't buy that as a cause of this engine noise on the new trucks.
Originally posted by Wisky So are you saying you do not hear a click click click when the engine is on and the Hood is open. Mine is quiet from in the cab.
Mine appears to be normal sounding as well. No unnecessary clicking noises. Very quiet in the cab. I will note that today I had the oil changed at the local Jiffy Lube I always use. I always stand in the bay area to watch them work on the truck.
After putting the oil in, they started the engine and I did hear some clicking knocking type noise until the oil pressure built up. But it was only for a second. Not sure if the clicking noise the folks are hearing is associated with lubrication (i.e. oil pressure/flow). The new 5W-20W oil is a lot lighter in weight. If the engine tolerances are off, there could be a lubrication problem, but I'm just guessing there.
Happy mine's quiet. My 4.6 V-8 in my '97 F150 ran smooth as silk for 105,000 (mileage when I sold it). Absolutely no engine problems to speak of.
Going on 7 weeks with my Screw. No noises, no shakes, no rattles. Very happy with truck. Only think wrong was I opened the door too wide and banged into my boat. Door edge guards will be in next week.
I did notice what seems more like classic rocker / lifter noise this morning. (Had to jump my truck because my prototype DVD player was left on)
starting the truck with the hood lifted. the sound does sound more like valvetrain than the injectors.
not going to worry about it yet. i will be watching this post.
it is not lookin good with the "noise." to me it sounds like valve clatter, or it could be a keeper. I took it to the dealer this morning, their tech called Ford engineers, their recommendation is to replace the heads. I am also told that to do all of that work on the engine they need to remove the body from the frame??? can this be possible??? I am starting to get that old nagging feeling that I may have made a huge mistake buying this truck. I am not looking forward to all the rattles I am sure to have once they put everything back together. I am not one to cry wolf, but I believe there is a design or assembly flaw in some of these new engines.
