Drop in Reverse Noise,

So my 2002 F-250 5.4L 2V Crew Cab LB (246,500 miles) had a noise reveal itself in the last few weeks. With driver window down and shifting into reverse (automatic) there is a noise, metal sounding clank. I haven't lifted the rear yet to look while the wife shifts the gears. Transmission fluid is topped off. The Drive shaft (because it a long wheel base) has 3 sections of drive shaft if I am not mistaken. I never replace the U joints in them either. However I have replaced the carrier bearing 3 years ago. I am just trying to isolate where and what might be making the noise. it's definitely toward the back of the truck that I hear it. Any ideas what could be making the noise? It's a Columbo type mystery.....

I would check the u-joints first. Have someone you trust ( hopefully wife) to not be a moron set the parking brake, stand on the brake hard, and put it into D or R while you watch the front and rear joints for play. Another option is to set up your phone to record video under the truck facing up to the joints while you shift the truck yourself. You could also wedge a large screwdriver into the joints and pry on them in different directions to check.

Follow up: the noise comes from the rear U-joint that holds the drive shaft to the back of the rear axle. I moved it and saw the slight movement of the U-joint. I think they are original. So why I am at it there is another one that attaches at the front. Sorry bad at the terminology. Ill get sealed Spicer U Joints. There are 4- MM 8 hex cap bolts. I need a 6 point box wrench. I don't want to strip anything but I put new ones back in. Do you think I can sand down the outer drive shaft? I am tempted to do it myself. I had a shop do the front shaft for the 4 wheel drive. This one comes down when you take the carrier bearing down.

Personally I wouldn’t sand anything.
As for the bolts, give it a good spray of PB Blaster/liquid wrench and let it sit overnight. A 12 point box should be just fine, the torque on those shouldn’t be too much. Just tap the wrench with a hammer to help shock them loose if needed. Take your time and be patient and I doubt you’ll round them off.
Do you have a press? You can bang them out with sockets and a hammer but they can be stubborn

I ordered a 6 pt 8mm wrench from NAPA. Yeah, I always do the PB Blaster shower on this 23 yr old beauty. Sometime even break out the Map Gas and yes, a few bangs of the persuasion hammer. Its gonna to be a Fall job for sure...

those bolts have blue loctite from the factory , so use the pb blaster , then the map gas torch before applying the wrench.
a drop of lecture on install is a good thing .
