I thinking of making a T5 swap my winter project in my 49 F1 Flathead, but I’m not finding many local and affordable s-10 options. I’ve come across a Jeep T5 but can’t find much information here and online. Does anyone experience with them and the fit in our trucks?
As you may or may not know already, what makes the S-10 T5 so popular is it's shifter location. I have the S-10 with a bench seat and it's location is good. I installed mine before kits became available.
You might can try the transmission shops too. I had mine built at a shop from scratch and they supplied the housing. Also, I will add that with a stock 3:73 diff, the S-10 first gear is a little low, (I can take off in second). The shop told me they could install V-8 gears (instead of the S-10 V6 gears) in the tranny to help with that.
To add to CJMOstang's question, can a non-S10 tranny work with bucket seats? Are kits available now for the non world class tranny (since S-10s are getting more scarce)? I would guess the input shafts come in variety of flavors too (dia and length), as well as the throw out bearing sleeve dia and length.
That World Class T5 is probably sought after in the Jeep community. I would think the S-10 version would be much easier to find and cheaper.
The T-5 used in Jeeps was the light duty version, not World Class. Believe it or not they are often swapped out in favor of more heavy duty 4 speeds for Jeeps that are frequently used off road. I had one in an old CJ-7 I had. I was constantly getting advice to baby it or it'll explode from the old timers
I got questionable information and you got bad advice. My CJ7 had the bulletproof T-18. I couldn't stand it on the freeway. I understood that the WC was used in later CJ's so I went looking. I couldn't find a WC but found a T-5 for $75. I found information about an upgrade that included the output shaft and housing. I performed this upgrade and installed it in my 78 Golden Eagle, hence my handle JeepTrix. If I could show you what I've put that tranny up to you would never doubt one again. It's all about how you drive. I have hauled HEAVY trailers through deep mud. I've pulled 3/4 ton Fords and Chevy's out of sink holes. Towed my 22' hard top cuddy cabin boat here there and everywhere. Rock crawled up some nerve wracking inclines. When I get back down to real world and air up my tires I hit the freeway and cruise comfortably at 70. I LOVE this transmission.
