Head bolts question

So I installed and torque down the head bolts and now I forgot something and have to take them back off. So can I reuse the bolts or do I have to buy a new set?

Factory head bolts are not torque to yield and can be reused on the small blocks. I don't know for sure about any other engine from this era.

On the bright side, you figured out you screwed up now vs having the entire engine assembled. Usually it's the other way around for me.

The head bolts will be fine; it's the gasket I would worry about

What about the gasket worries you?

Unless it was recommended by the gasket manufacturer, I would put the gasket on dry but that’s me.

There are not too many people that are so stupid to reuse a headgasket. So, nobody has any real experience with reusing a headgasket. I am one of those butchers that has. More than once. As long as the headgasket was not used [ie the engine was never run, fluids never installed], I have never ever have had a problem. If you want advice from some butcher with that experience, you don't have to buy a new headgasket. That is assuming you did not use sealer or banged up the gasket while removing/installing the head.

I recently remember reading that MLS headgaskets can be reused, even if they have been run. I'm not certain I would go down that path.

The only reason that I bought a new head Gasket was because I use the red high-tack gaske sealer on the gasket so when I took the head back off it stuck to the head in the top of the block.

Yeah, probably a good idea to swap it out. I am not a believer of sealer and gaskets. There are a few exceptions but I tend to use sealer or gaskets, but not both. If you have to use both, you are not doing your job cleaning or the surfaces are not right to be sealed.

What are you even talking about? Reusing the head gasket was never mentioned by anyone. The question was about reusing the head bolts.

even more heresy- I'll bet the red tack wouldn't have caused any real trouble on a 300.

But that's NOT to say that I wouldn't have changed it too, if all it cost me was a new head gasket.

t
has never reused a head gasket... well, except for once, on a VG4D, just to see if the rings would seal.
