Any thoughts on swapping a od trans into my 90 crew with 351 C6 combo? My mileage is terrible, and I am hoping to increase it a bit with the OD. Which AOD should I use? Any tricks with this swap?
I would go with the E4OD, it was a pretty strong transmission. I thought they done away with the C-6 by then, but i do not know. The C-6 was a very strong transmission, but the E4OD is comparable. I do not think the AOD or the AODE is as strong. I would go to the junkyard, find a E4OD, and take it to a tranny shop, and tell them to put the ford fixes in it. The 96 and newer E4OD were alot better than the older style. Ford fixed a lot of the bugs in the transmission, and any tranny shop should be able to fix them for you. You are going to have to find a different computer, and wiring setup, i'm sure. Find one out of a newer pickup, with the same motor, but a E4OD, and then find a wiring harness which will fit. That would be the hard way of doing it, but probably the cheaper. There might be an adapter kit out there some where, just have to look a little bit.
I have a link at home to a company that sells a computer for just the swap your talking about. They have a computer for the E40D trans and you can dial in the shift points yourself.
If you need this link just respond to the post and I will get the link for you or if I remember I will post it when I get home.
I am also looking into an OD set up for my 89 four door bronco. I also have a C-6 trans. I have picked up most of the pieces for a ZF 5-speed swap.
One thing to keep in mind is if the E40D is the same length as the ZF you may have to shorten the rear driveshaft and lengthen the front. The ZF 5-speed is roughly 3 inches longer than my C-6. The transfer case from my C-6 (1356) will bolt up to the ZF.
The F trans is 30 inches from the bell housing fase to the transfer case face.
I don't know how much Baumann charges for that wiring and computer kit for the E4OD, but after you buy the transmission and the computer kit, you might be cheaper going with a Overdrive/Underdrive unit. Also, an OD tranny is probably not going to increase your resale value as much as the Overdrive unit. Just a thought.
