1995 ford econoline 460 motor, tioga motorhome. Not currently titled/insured and need to get running and sold quickly. This has been mostly sitting other than moving around the driveway for a few yrs. It was very low on gas, I'm thinking it sucked a bunch of crap up. We have no mobile mechanics that will work on a motor home (we're rural and even though it's basically no different than a conversion van). Went to move it recently and noticed the choke wouldn't set. So gave enough gas to keep it idling warm up some and move it. Added 5 gal of gas knowing it was extremely low and check fluids.Again, choke wouldn't set and was a PIA to get started and only stays running at higher RPM. Def. running rich as you could smell and see black smoke. Went and got a bottle of lucas injector cleaner for the gas tank added another 5 gal, sprayed the carb (from inside while still on) w/ gunk out carb cleaner and let sit for a day. Went out sprayed the carb again hoping if something is just clogged up or stuck from sitting. Following day tried to start, same thing as before. Kept the RPM up some hoping the cleaners would blow through what ever may be in the system from tank being low or carbon build up- smoke much thicker black. Per instructions from hubs, added another bottle of lucas and another 5 gal of gas, another spray on the carb (of course most of it is right under the dang frame! ). Two day later he started it again same thing more thick black smoke and have to keep RPM up to idle. I can't even see where the air/fuel mixture screws are on the carb (stock holly motorcraft 4 bl). I'm at a loss the one mobile mechanic who said he doesn't do motorhomes said it sounded like a fuel (well duh) or igintion system isn't burning fuel correctly. ????
It's a carb issue. The carb needs to come off and be cleaned, adjusted to spec and have some new parts installed. A carb rebuild kit will get you there.
There in lies the problem. I can't get to it, or have yet to figure the best way to, to remove it. More is visible from inside the cabin but the bulk is under the dash rail frame and very little shows up from the engine compartment side. Ideas on the best way to remove it??
[So found a mobile mechanic finally!! He's pulling the carb for rebuild, he said also needs cap and rotor. He'll be back on wed am, so we'll see. Fingers crossed!!!

It's an 85. Uggg mobile mechanic $150/hr plus parts $680 later, carb rebuild, new cap n rotor. Tried to check plugs, one def. fouled, which I knew, the other the porcelain cracked! It's still in place. He said it would be another 200 to do plugs. I told him I couldn't afford that. So apparently the plugs are likely all frozen, other than the one he got out. So now I guess I try putting the plug wire back on over the cracked one (pieces are still intact, just cracked). Now I'm afraid to try and get plugs out being frozen. So I'm stuck at the moment. I did read heating up the engine shutting it down and pulling while still warm, but a little apprehensive....
