351W roller cam selection

I bought a '94 351W roller cam long block with a carb intake. The seller says it has a hydraulic high rpm roller cam. I'm seeking suggestions for a street able cam swap since the motor will used in a '85 Bronco with C6 auto.

Probably the thing to do would be to get the cam out of the engine and see what you've got. It might be just what you need, you never know until you check it out because cams can be anything.

Agreed. I removed the cam, couldn't I'D it with stamped number. Seller stated it was a high rpm cam. I need off idle to midrange (rv) maybe. Just looking for a little more than stock for fun to drive. Stock C6 and converter. Edelbrock 600 cfm carb will be used.

It's something that you want to rumble a bit but have some mid range torque and run good. For something like that in a mostly stock 351 inch engine I'd probably shoot for a duration of between about 214 to 218 degrees at .050 on a lobe sep of about 108 to 110.

Is there someone local who can plot the cam for you? Otherwise you could send to me and I can do that but it would be nice to not have to ship it. It still could be just what you need or it could be used as a core to grind something that's just right.

What number did you see? Since you asked random people on a forum what cam to buy, why didn’t you ask them about the number you found? Are you going to be changing the heads? What about the exhaust system- stock manifolds or headers? Long tube or shorty?

Is that with the stock heads?

Did you ever call a cam company or parts supplier like Summit Racing to ask them for suggestions? There is a lot of room for error when choosing a camshaft. I had a custom camshaft made for my 408. The manufacturer asked me a bunch of questions about the engine, vehicle and and intended use.

I took DaveMcLain advice and talked to our local engine machine shop owner for suggestions. Considering my low budget build I ordered a Howards 220235-12 from Summit. Specs out a bit more than a stock cam. I requested the Summit rep to email me a quote; thus, I added more to it at my leisure instead of hasty impulse buys. It will be months before assembly.

That cam is a lot more than the stock cam but it should work well. It will be very noticeable. Valve springs and retainers will probably be the next things to get worked out. Normally for this sort of application what I use on a stock head that comes with the rotators on the exhaust is a set of retainers that's 2 different part numbers. I use the PBM Erson 502S on the intake and the 502 on the exhaust. This evens out the installed heights perfectly and it will allow a spring like the PBM 3100 to fit right on the head at around 1.800 and then shim for whatever loads are necessary. There are many other springs and retainers that are very similar but this is what I use most of the time.
