Lower Engine failure
I have a 2017 F350 6.7 Powerstroke. About a month ago I was pulling a camper and the engine started knocking. I was in Geroiga at the time so I had it towed to Diesiel David's. They said It was a lower engine failure and needed a new engine and turbo. About 23-28K depending on different add ons. My question. Is what would cause that?
Today I I was going g to clean the truck out and the battery is dead so I opened the hood for the first time since the engine failure and noticed the air filter hose was not connected. Probably a stupid question but could that cause any of the engine problems. Thanks in advance.

The air cleaner hose may have been disconnected to scope the turbo. Since the engine is theoretically toast anyways, they may have not been as particular as usual putting it back together, may have just forgotten, or might have been planning on going back in soon. Either way, odds are good that this didn't cause your issue. If it was found that way by them, they would have said "It was a lower engine failure and needed a new engine and turbo, likely caused by the air cleaner hose being loose" . . . which you didn't mention above.
