I'm in the middle of swapping a 7.3 into a 5.8 truck, both 96 F350s but the gasser is 4wd and the 7.3 is 2wd. just got the 5.8 out last night and about to power wash the engine bay. The cross members are different on the 2 trucks because of the engines. has anyone modified their own cross member or did you just cut it out and replace? I'm thinking thats the easiest solution. It was getting dark and i havent taken any measurements yet to see if the frames are even the same width, and they are filthy. I can fabricate whatever i need in the end but just looking to see if anyone has come across this.
When I swapped my 5.8 truck I unbolted the plates that bolt to the cross member from the 7.3. The passenger side will bolt right into place, the driver will require drilling 2 holes on the bottom. I didn’t weld metal onto the cross member for the fourth hole. I made a template from the donor cross member and placed it on the 5.8 one to drill in the correct location.
