Recall powertrain controll module

What is this about?

Powertrain control module software update biodiesel deposit accumulation

Issue Date
2024-12-20
Campaign
24S78/24V957
Description
On your vehicle, it may be possible for aged biodiesel deposits to accumulate in the high pressure fuel pump. This may result in extended cranking without starting while the vehicle is parked, or loss of motive power while driving.

when did diesel superdutys sit long enough for bio-diesel to clog up the pump? Especially 2020-2021?
Sounds like a B/S from CARB.

The larger question, how is a software update going to fix biodiesel deposits?

the deposits form a tar on surfaces

the walls of the cp4 pump pistons and plunger get this tar build up if the motor sits for a while

the tar acts like a glue and it takes excessive break away force for the cp4 to break loose from the tar bond

this break away force is excessive....so much so that it causes permeate cp4 timing gear slippage ...meaning the time gear stays out of alignment since the cp4 timing gear is a press fit with no key ways to lock it into position.

the out of time cp4 is a soot generator and a dpf killer

the software re-program is an effort to use software to correct a mechanical timing gear misalignment

the smoke screen ford is telling owners is that the reprogram is a secret sauce that increases cp4 bearing cooling.....translation...we (ford usa) know that during the cp4 attempts to break free of the tar sludge...the "special coating" on cam lobes wore off....so we need this "pcm reprogram" to send more fuel thru the metering valve so that particles and heat can be carried off with return fuel.

So the CP4 creates timed high pressure events that are timed with the fueling events? The fuel pressure PID seems pretty stable. I understand there is a timing gear/marks that need to be aligned, but it seems like a lot of pressure cycling that would cause undo stress on components.

I work with peristaltic pumps, there are two pressure pulses per revolution, but as long as we’re not at the pump capacity it’s a pretty smooth output.

ford is pretty clever at work arounds and it would not surprise me if the timing marks on the cp4 gear is a work around.....not impossible that the time gear alignment notch is to prevent hydro locking under a situation when the cp4 pistons are doing a compression while there is no injector demand....in other words...the timing mark on the cp4 gear has a purpose....it may not be intuitive .
