I am kind of at wits end with this thing now. I had the starter gone thru and was told it is in great condition, replaced the voltage regulator and still not showing a charge on the amp meter, I had the generator gone thru and it was found it had a broken ground wire, they fixed that and turned down the armature and said it was working fine and showing a charge. Installed it in the truck and it showed very little charge, polarized the the regulator and still the same. I went out with the truck last night it ran fine. When I came home it was dark out so I had the lights on about a half hour ride not showing any charge on the amp meter. I shut the truck off in my driveway and tried to restart it with no luck. This morning I went out and it started right up so I took it to interstate battery to have the battery tested and it tested fine both running and shut off. There is a problem somewhere but I have run out of places to look

How old and what size are your battery cables? They should be at least 2/0. I have had corrosion on the inside of my cables that was not obvious from the outside. So every time I checked the ends for corrosion, I moved them around enough to make a temporary connection. New cables fixed my problem. My local Interstate Battery custom made my cables at a very reasonable cost.

So true. Years ago I had starting issues, especially when hot. My cables looked good on the outside. I got new ones made. I cut an old one in half and the inside strands were corroded.

I am not sure how old they are, I have only had the truck since the end of May. Everything looks fairly new but I will check again. The previous owner had restored about 95% of the truck and I am finishing up all of the smaller stuff. I will give it a shot with the cables, thanks for your input

Okay guys I am going to throw a stupid question out there. 6 volt positive ground generator, what would or should be the correct output at the generator before the regulator? I am trying to narrow this problem down

7 or more volts I believe is what you would be looking for wish some engine RPMs.

Okay, thank you for the info. I guess I will start a search for a generator. I just had this rebuilt but it's not putting out what it should be

A more thorough test is probably in order:

I would like to say thank you to all of you that helped me out with your knowledge and suggestions. After a lot of research and trial and error, I finally got this truck charging the way it should be. A simple adjustment to the regulator and it is running fine. Thanks again everyone. This forum is great

Good to hear Tico. Out of curiosity, what was adjusted on your regulator? Reason I am asking is on these mechanical type of regulators. Now days, how well are they really adjusted at the factory, or are they even?

A friend of mine is an electrical engineer and professor at WPI Colledge in Worcester, Ma. He did a tone of research and we tried a little test on the truck last night and found that we could make a slight adjustment on the armature side of the regulator.. He just cracked it open a little bit more and it made a ton of difference. That brought the generator up to the right output
