I've been having an intermittent problem with my 2002 ranger edge not wanting to start. There is power to all the systems, it simply won't turn over. It's done this about 8 times since I bought the vehicle in August of last year. And, of course, the dealer can't replicate the problem or even begin to diagnose it.
One of the tow truck drivers mentioned that it may have something to do with the alarm system...but resetting the alarm doesn't seem to help.
Welcome to FTE yellowedge40204.
Just wondering if the alarm system is factory? Not that it really matters, I've seen both factory and aftermarket alarms screw up.
The next time it happens, put the shifter in neutral and try to start it there.
sadly, the alarm is factory. And believe me, i've tried everything short of standing on my head and eating a bug to start the thing. Neutral, Park, Drive, resetiting the alarm...nothing makes a difference
My wife's '03 Explorer had this problem. It would start fine most of the time, but once in a while it just wouldn't start. All systems worked, power to everything, but the engine would not crank. Nothing. No clicking, just the sound of one of us cursing the day we bought the thing.
The amazingly complicated problem, after the dealer replaced the starter and tried to diagnose it three times:
The bolts securing the main computer were not tightened. I know the 03 Explorer and the 02 Ranger are pretty different, but it's worth a shot. I saw it myself - there were three bolts holding down the computer housing. The top one was finger tight and the lower three were loose. The connections were therefore loose, so the car didn't start sometimes.
However, there may have been some other problem and the dealer was just jerking me around. The explanation seemed suspicious, but we haven't had the problem since. PS: Exp is a 4.0.
