weak backup lights

Sounds to me like you may have a short somewhere draining voltage to your backup lights. Are your stop lights OK? Do you have a towing package attached that might have shorted?
Are your lenses clean and clear? I just checked my 92 3.0L 2wd's backup lenses and they are clear. If yours' are frosted over that might account for your less than bright lights. You can fix them with Meguiar's Clear Plastic Cleaner and Meguiar's Clear Plastic Polish (found at boat supply outlets for cleaning plastic windscreens) or use a good quality rubbing compound.

If you can, measure the voltage across the light bulb with the bulb installed and the light on. (That is measure at the two bulb connections.) If it’s not 12 VDC then you have a bad connection somewhere. Measure from ground to the bulb. You should have 12 VDC at one end and 0VDC at the other.
If you have less than 12 then the problem is before the bulb. If you have more than 0 at the other then you have a bad connection between the bulb and ground.
