General Engine upgrades

I've been a long-time lurker on these forums and have found tons of good info but a lot of the performance/generally better to buy the upgraded one rather than stock upgrades information is very spread out
onto the project I just pulled my 302 out of my 92 f150 and I'm doing a rebuild on it not fully disassembled yet so I'm unsure of the engine conditions but it was running fine so I'm not expecting anything major but I want to ask if I need to replace stuff like the cam and rebuilding the heads what are some thing I should do / change that would be generally better than stock not trying to get any crazy performance or anything just general if you're in there soon as well go with the better option I'm not amazingly knowledgeable so any help would be appreciated
I'm considering putting exhaust headers on it mostly for looks and to rid myself of the stock y pipe idk if they would realistically perform better or not
And from there I'm sort of lost outside of just stock replacements as this is my first real engine work
and I'm doing the 4hole injector upgrade as well
I am also planning on contacting a machine shop to rebuild the heads and check all the tolerances possibly even do balancing but idk if it will realistically make a difference so any input on that as well would be wonderful

A '92 truck 5.0 could be a bit of an oddball motor, find the head casting numbers and post them up. If you have E6xx heads they should be replaced with E7TE or F1ZE heads, the E6 heads were the most restrictive ever produced. The motor should have a roller cam but it will be a tiny thing... very low lift and short duration, this is also a major bottleneck. An F4TE(explorer) cam or 5.0HO cam are healthy upgrades that can be sourced for little money on the used market, these cams will swap in with no changes or additional parts. These 2 changes have the potential to unlock upwards of 100hp.

What are you doing with the computer side of things. If the answer is nothing, then everything you do has to work with the limits of your ECU.
