Finally....got under the truck and checked the fluid. Plug came out really easy and the fluid was correct level and looked clean.
I also looked at the gob of sealant and that's what it was, no damage just as mentioned above a sloppy job.

To me it looks like a gasket was used…which is what I do…but maybe someone later left the gasket on the case and used sealant over the gasket.
i don’t see why a mechanic would be opposed to removing the cover, replacing the gasket, and reinstalling the cover if the cover is not damaged or replacing the cover. Also, any b ok t hole damage can be repaired so I don’t know what the big deal is unless the maint people just want to do drain and fills.
