tail light problems

well i was told the other night that my tail lights were out, so i checked them the next morning and they worked fine. but then when i turned the lights on i no longer had brake lights. i looked at the wiring and some one who had this truck before me really did a job on it. i saw that none of the wire colors matched up where they were put together. none of the wires coming out of the steering collum match the ones up under the dash.what color are the original wires and is there an easy way to solve this problem. oh, the truck is a 69 f100 ranger.

I had a simular problem with wacky wiring. The wiring diagrams found in most of the truck manuals helped a little. But what really solved my problem is the wrecking yard. I was able to see other trucks like mine and how they were wired and found a wiring harness that just unclips under the dash. I just unclipped the wiring at the wrecking yard and replaced my wacky wiring with the fresh harness, problem solved.
