Just wondering, I really don't. I've heard here and there that they're a tribute to the original rodders, but I don't agree. They build stuff out of random parts, and it seems that they're supposed to be ugly. As I remember it, the guys back from WW2 ( who I didn't know about) and Korea were building cars to go fast -- with what they could get and what they could afford. Cars were becoming more available and you COULD make something that would go pretty good. But, these were young guys and they generally didn't have a lot of $$ to work with.
Customs started to show up somewhere in that period with Ed Roth, Barris and the like. Some guys went for that, but the focus then was appearance. They did have a motor, but it wasn't the main deal. ("If it won't go chrome it" )
I don't really care about rat rods, and if guys want to build them, well good. I don't really know what they're trying to do, but it's their time and their money. I just don't find them a tribute to anybody. If I'm wrong, please educate me.
To me, I really don't care one way or another.
Some are pretty cool, some are pretty stupid.
Some are done in good taste, some are just way outlandish.
Some are engineering marvels, some are down right scary.
Count me in the no dice on a rat rod. I understand the why, (low funds) way they got started and just toss in anything you can find to make it work. So I salute the effort of those that do, just not my cup of tea.
Same. I understand them, but they've never been for me either. That said, I think the best of rat rods are the extreme wild ones. If you're gunna do it, load with all kinds of trash and welded on junk haha. Makes them more interesting to look at......... but I have no desire to build or own one. Still, there's something cool about them, just not for me is all.
