Since replacing the 302 in my friends 1993 F150 didn’t go as well as we’d hoped, we are thinking of trying something different. I have an 80’s 351 short block I was gonna build for a Mustang but went a different way. We are thinking of swapping the new cam from the 302 into the 351 along with the heads and getting the roller conversion lifters. I understand most of the differences between the motors, know I need a new oil pan and lower intake at least. Can we still use the upper 302 intake, injectors and TB and will the computer run it as normal? The TB’s appear to be the same from the research I have done. We plan on going with the Pimp X controller eventually but it would be nice to get the truck running sooner at least.

According to some threads here, the computer should run the 351W depending on what if any modifications you make from stock. Upper and lower intakes are different between the 5.0L and 5.8L engines. Both engines use the same 19# injectors and throttle bodies. All of the 302 electrical connections are the same and will plug right into the 351W sensors except for the knock sensor which was only on a 302.
It’s an actually a cam you suggested for the 302, the comp 35-512-8.
Good to know the upper intake is different, would not have guessed that. There is a guy a few hours away selling a complete top end and all front accessory brackets from a 95 351. Might try and snag that if it’s still available.
It’s making some noise we can’t figure out. It’s coming from the top end. We put new lifters in and the noise moved. I think possibly some of the dog bones are hanging up on the new lifters as they went on a bit snug or possibly some blocked oil passages causing starvation. It was a good salvage yard engine but it sat in a garage for 10+ years. The bearings and cylinders all looked good so we resealed it, cammed it and lubed it. We got tired of taking it apart so my buddy went and bought a new car so the truck is now a side project instead of a daily driver. We plan on checking a few more things before we pull the engine again just in case.
