howdy,
took my truck to mechanic today cause i was tired of the idle problem i have. basically he cleaned the throttle body out real good (b/c disconnecting battery and resetting computer didn't work) w/ some spray can stuff. it fixed the problem and i could tell by the stiffer gas and such. however, when i press the gas it goes and accelerates, and just when u think its good, it kinda lags then continues with a tiny engine-like lurch. mechanic drove it and said it was b/c my lifters were off putting the gas flow and spark firing and stuff off. how serious a problem is this, as i am running out of funds. $$$ thanks, william
Wonder what he ment by lifters being off. Lifters are self adjusting. I wonder if he ment the cam timing is off, stretched chain or something. I somehow doubt its the lifters. When was the last time you did a good tune-up? You know, plugs, wires, rotor, timing..also a big thing to change, with the problem you describe is the fuel filter. A pluged filter can idle fine, because only a little gas needs to get through to idle. Once you're accelerating, you need more fuel and the pluged filter cant get enough through, so you get studdering.
Everything Stomper recommended, and..... how many miles are on your oxygen sensor? A lot of the time, they'll go bad and trip the check engine light, but not always. Recommendations vary, but many manufacturers advise changing them as part of the tune up at 70K miles.
Did your mechanic clean the throttle body off of the truck? If not, I wonder if the spray cleaner and loosened gunk hasn't fouled your O2 sensor on its way out of the engine. The symptoms you describe sound a lot like one on the fritz.
restorit,
no the throttle body was on the truck, he just disconnected the intake hoses for airbox, and sprayed in a hole inside throttle body. and problem was fixed. he said something about an additive that loosens gunk in engine and gets everything lubricated again. he failed to mention a brand, any one know of one? thanks, wb
For cleaning the oil, lifters, etc., Marvel Mystery oil added to the crankcase (substitute for oil). For lubing the injectors, Marvel Mystery oil or SeaFoam added to the fuel. For cleaning serious deposits from the combustion chamber and injectors, STP Super Concentrated Fuel Injector Cleaner (black bottle, use only once per 5,000 miles). For regular use, STP Gas Treatment (I read a test several years back that found that regular use would remove carbon deposits). Just a few items..... I'm sure there are others that people have had good lucj with.
Agreed. But, should you want to give them a try, just follow the instructions on the bottle. Marvel can be added to the oil or gas; proper quantities are listed on the label.
