CD player Install

How do I get a cd player in my 71 dash but still look good?
Has anyone but a new cd player in there pickup, did they cut the bracket are use a different braket, does anyone have any pictures they could help me with this, i was thinking of weldin on the dash and fabracte my own custom dash stero piece but maybe someone has a better idea? i have allready cut the stock braket and it looks like crap because i cant get the plastic ring to fit that goes around the deck because of the sides of the metal bracket. so anyone have pics thanks

The only thing I have ran across is a kit that you can get from a sound system shop. The origonal frame can not be used. The kit comes with a (ugly) plastic frame that replaces the origonal. It sicks out of the dash about a couple inches. I think the whole thing looks like horse crap, but that is my opinion. I was going to get a CD player in my P/U but when I saw that, and decided to forget it. I stayed with my Pioneer **** stereo. Eventually I think I will get a CD changer, mount it behind the seat and call it good.

i mounted mine in the glovebox. i have a stock radio in the dash for apperance, i also mount all my speakers up under the dash, it took alot of doing and i lost my glove box but my truck can thump, and i even though the stock radio doesnt work the light does come on when you turn it on. so it looks like the stock radio is playing when the other one really is.

I put an MP player in my 67 in place of the stock radio. The MP player allows about 125 songs on a CD. Anyhow, I had to cut the metal "ears" off to get it in but I think it looks pretty good. I posted a couple of photos here:

Yes, I am also curious as to where you got that black trim piece. I think the 67's have the advantage to the later trucks by having the smaller radio opening. Here's mine:

The plastic was just a common kit, not made specifically for a 67. I really wanted to get the thing in there without damaging the stock opening but couldn't figure any way to do it. I could have used the glovey (almost did) but I figured I'd probably crash trying to change a CD while driving. I say, buy an adapter, cut the ears and enjoy your tunes.

i am in the middle of the restoration of my 67 right now. we are working on the cab right now and have been working on the stereo system. we ended up cutting the tabs off where the radio was and then welded a mount plate the comes out from the dash. i think it will look better than the plastic filler pieces that you can buy. just an idea for you i will try and get a picture of it on my gallery so you can see what it looks like.

I left the original radio in the dash for cosmetic reasons. I did not want to modify the dash at all. I went to the autoparts store and got a universal under the dash mount. I covered the head liner with naugahide and then attached the box to the headliner center front. Looks pretty good IMOHO. Email me if you want to see a pic of the finnished product.

I installed a CD player in my 69. I don't know if the stereo holes are the same size as in 71. Are they? If so, then you can go to Best Buy and ask for a mounting kit for a 1970's volvo. If you bend back the ears (you don't have to and shouldn't cut them) and slide in the plastic piece from the kit upside down, it will set your stereo face perfectly vertical (not slanted like the dash). You will have to drill two holes into the bent back ears and screw in the plastic piece. Then, there should be a conveniently placed bolt on the underside of the dash that you can attach a piece of gastank strap to and then run the strap to a mounting bolt on the back of the stereo. it makes for a very clean factory look (considering the fact that there weren't CD players back in 71). I must say that this was not my idea. I got it from another board member but I don't remember his name. You may be able to search for the old thread from about a year ago.

I came across the same problem in my '68. I found a headliner from JC Whitney which has a tray for a CD player molded into it, as well as 4, 4" speaker mounted into it. I just left the stock AM radio in the dash in order to keep it lloking as original as possible. As for mounting it in the dash, break out the sawzall and welder.

I put a cd player in my '71. I bent the original tabs back. I then inserted the cd supplied mounting housing (Pioneer) bending tabs to secure it. I then cut the original bezel with a dremel to fit around the unit. The player slides into the housing after attaching the modified bezel. I mounted surface speakers on the rear ceiling behind my head. Since ol'blue is a little noisy this was my best location. Good luck.
