We just got our truck (1994 F350 7.3 turbo) back from the shop, we drove it for 2 days and then today smoke started coming from the dash, the fuse panel was hot, the windshield wipers came on with the truck off and there's a black box under the glovebox by the floor board that was hot, we are trying to figure out what that box is. Thank for any and all help
The black box you are refiring to could be the interminant control/relay for the windshield wipers. It is located in that area. To me that tells me it went bad/shorted out because the wipers came on with the truck off. https://www.ebay.com/itm/12699713453...3ABFBM9IeLvuVl
You might check the wire to the cigarette lighter.
The operation of the ashtray over time does abrade and eventually strip bare the wires directly behind it, one of which feeds the ashtray and another feeds the ashtray light.
I was told to check mine when I bought it and sure enough, the wires only had air as an insulator. Common problem in trucks that are or previously owned by smokers that use the ashtray.
Watch a YouTube video on how to remove the ashtray. A bit of a pain, but once you see it done, it's not hard.
