exhaust

Hello everyone,
I'm getting ready to weld dual exhaust up onto the headers. 400 engine. What is the max diameter of exhaust pipe I should use. I'm going with flow master muffler's. 79 F-250 4x4 Supercab.

the largest pipe diameter that you should need is 2 1/2 inch. i recommend welding in a crossover pipe, either h or x pipe.

If the engine is stock use2 or 2-1/4". Use 2" for the H-pipe crossover.

Here are some figures from an engine building book:

SUGGESTED EXHAUST PIPE SIZES:
Engine HP; SINGLE/DUAL
=============================
200-300; 3.0"/2.25"
300-375; 3.5/2.5
375-450; 4.0/3.0
450-550; 4.5/3.5
550-650; 5.0/3.5
650-800; ---/4.0
800-1000; ---/4.5
1000+++: ---/5.0
STRICTLY DAILY DRIVER GO DOWN ONE SIZE
BIG NITROUS USE ONE SIZE BIGGER

Curious about the H or X pipe, whats the gain on using this type of set up. I've never used this method. I've always ran two pipes side by side with equal length and mufflers. I do want an exhaust that will give me the most flow and horsepower. Not really seeking the noise, just a good strong sound coming out. A truck this big deserves to be agressive and I dont want to denie it of that.
