Ghost in the Machine

My puddle lights are possessed. When I say puddle lights I mean all the exterior and bed LED lighting. I thought it was a battery issue but I have 2 brand new batteries and the issue is still there.

They come on at random times and I can't get them to turn off by locking or unlocking the truck etc... the only thing that appears to have any impact is opening the tailgate, pressing the button in the bed and waiting about 5 minutes before they turn off. Sometimes after doing that they will play this game with me where they start to dim and then come back on full bright multiple times.

No rhyme or reason I can identify. Started doing it last week when I drove through a down pour so thought it was water related but they are now doing it randomly after weeks of no water (I live in Az).

I'm baffled, ford is baffled (took it to them and they replaced the switch in the bed but did not identify the failing batteries).... It happens day or night.

I thought the new batteries had fixed the issue but a month or so after replacing them the spirits have returned....

Anyone have similar experiences?

I had a intermittent issue with my running lights flashing dimly, what sounded like the throttle body actuating back and forth, and a communication loss with most modules. No Crank no start and the only fix was to disconnect the battery only then would the truck start. There was no rhyme or reason it would happen. Tried a battery first and it did not work, next was the outside fuse box, no corrosion or water damage seen and thirdly I put in a BCM and had it reprogrammed. Have not had the issue since. Best I could figure was the intrusion alarm was setting things off and it would just go down hill from there. At home where I would lock my truck it would do it and at work where I would leave my truck unlocked and the key in the ignition It would do it. I knew better than to take it to Ford because of the inability to make it happen in front of them. I just researched and tested whet I could. And this was when the truck was brand new. Fast forward to 3 years later and never an issue since. The BCM's do some funny things to these trucks when the failure happens.

Perhaps the connectors by the spare tire? That has caused some odd problems for people and especially since you mentioned the tailgate may have an affect on it.
