Hi,
My 4.6L seems to be making a 'knocking' noise when it is driven hard. It sounds similar to a bad rod bearing, but its not consistently loud enough to be that...and its been doing it for a while, the rod would have been through the side of the block by now. I am thinking detonation? The fuel spec in the manual is 87 octane which is what i use. The knock goes away once the engine cools down and does not come back until its under hard acceleration. Could it be a knock sensor? I'd really appreciate any info on this thanks!!!
Mine has been doing it since it had about 10,000 miles. I have never got it to stop completely. I have to run 93 octane in it and it still does it under very hard acceleration. I think its due to carbon buildup, but I could be wrong. I have a friend that owns a mechanic shop that is going to decarbon it for me to see if that fixes it.
