How hard is it to put power window/locks in my truck? What parts do I need? What other power options did they have that was factory between the XL and XLT from 92-96? I know the body chrome options.
This conversion would be a fairly straightforward affair - mostly a bolt in / plug & play. Your best bet would be to find a donor vehicle with all the items complete & unmolested by any of the salvage yard butchers whose only tools seem to be a torch & a pair of wirecutters. You will also want the interior trim panels that have the provision for the switches. Availability of vinyl & fabric colorants means you need not hold out for a truck with the same interior color. Proper removal of all components will be somewhat time consuming, but quite educational for the install process in your truck, as this will help you to know where & how everything fits together. Do remember as you are removing the parts from the donor truck that speaker wires are also integral to the wiring loom for the pl/pw. If your donor truck has the power mirrors you might also want to consider making this upgrade @ the same time. Windows will be the same, but the entire regulator sections will need to be swapped out. Your existing doors should be "dimpled" in the places where new mountings are needed. Use of machine screws vs rivets is a personal matter, but if you opt for machine screws be sure to use locking nuts & / or thread lock compound, lest you have to take it all apart later to retighten them.
As always, a Ford Shop Manual & wiring diagram or EVTM are invaluable tools.
If you are unable to find a complete system from a single donor there is quite a bit of interchangeability in window & lock motors - even between car & truck lines, but be sure to check compatibility first.
I've done these types of conversions / enhancements in the past. Threading & fishing wires can be difficult, but don't get discouraged in the midst of the project! The one I am still most proud of is creating a wiring harness to put the illuminated entry system from a Lincoln Town Car in my 1985 F150, complete with the 10-cut lighted door lock cylinders. (This was in the pre-keyless entry system days.)
I am not too sure if Motorhaven would have this info or not. They seem to specialize in the body/engine/drivetrain of the vehicle. The EVTM (Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual) from Ford, available through Helm, Inc. is year & model specific and possibly more detailed in these matters.
Motorhaven resources usually cover ranges of years & models and might, therefore, be more helpful in locating parts from other years & models that would be the same as what you need.
