I wondered that myself. Curious what is in the way that the stock, original filter no longer fits.
The Motorcraft FL300 was used on 302/5.0's Fox bodies and all the way to 1995 and the end of sbf Mustang production and is a shorter version of the FL1A. I have a leftover in my cabinet from my Mustang days over 20 years ago. It would be a shorter, direct replacement for the stock filter if necessary.
FE engines used several different oil filter housings. It is a separate piece, unlike a small block where the filter mounting is part of the block. The housings put the filter different angles to fit the different chassis used over the years. It sounds like the OP has a car style housing.
