My finace and have a 2000 XLT 4.0 SOHC Explorer. We recently aquired an amp and speakers, and I am attempting to install this setup in the cargo area. I need to know where I can connect the power cord so that it powers down when the truck is off. The radio is almost always on, so I don't need it keyed off of the radio. I also have not yet found a book that I liked enough to buy, so I have no schematics. Would someone be able to give me a hand? We'd appreciate it. Thanks!

P.S.~ Does the stock head unit have pre-amp RCA outputs? CD/Tape combo. Thanks again!

ok of course you know the amp power wire goes to the battery through the firewall hole. the remote wire on your amp must hookup to the power(red wire) on the back of the head unit. that way when the power to the HU is off the power to the amp is off.
just realized your running your stock radio.i dont think youll be able to hook a amp up to the back for their might not be any rca preouts.i could be wrong but the radio is one of the ways ford cheaped out on
Thank you for your reply. I guess I didn't mention that my amp is an older Pioneer, and has no remote power lead, only a ground and a positive terminal. And I did some more investigating, and found that there is no RCA outs on the HU. I guess I'm SOL unless I get anotehr head unit, get some form of adapter, or have a shop install it and the changer I've also picked up for it. A Sony Explode 10 disk MP3 changer. Anyway, I appreciate your help. Thanks again!
you can hook your amp up with the factory head unit, you just have to buy the wiring harness kit for your vehicle. it is goes between the head unit and the plug for the factory existing wiring and has RCA outs built in that put out the same signal going to your rear speakers. they are available at most any place that sells and installs car stereos and usually run about $20.
Am not sure exactly were it goes in you model ford, but you have to hook it up directly to the battery, or alternator(if you want it to shut off with the key use alt.) but they draw lots of power, thats why you have to run it directly there, other wise you will be blowing fues left and right or blowing other devices, also make sure you have the right gauge wire, for the application, dont want to put it in then when you test it the wire fries
ok if you dont hook the amp power wire directly to the battery using a 60awg fuse then your a moron who needs to be slapped. i do this on the side for all my friends. you dont hook it up to your altenator. the remote wire from the amp is wired to the power lead on the back of a cd player. ill take pics of my setup if i have to.the only wire from the amp that comes in touch with your head unit will be the remote wire. and the rcas.make sure you find a nice grounding spot( i lifted a bolt on my rear seats slipped the wire underneath then tightened the bolt back down.but i dont see why you wanna run a system of a factory radio.its only doin maybe 15x4 power if that.so when you turn your volume up your gonna get a lot of distortion.
btw if there is no remote wire your amp is gonna draw power from your battery no matter if your radio is on or not.thats why todays amps have the remote wire feature.
