Wild horses power steering pump issues

Finally bought the wild horse Saginaw power steering pump and got it installed
Seems like it sticks out much further than stock pump making connections to it kind of funny.
doubt I’m the only one who’s had this issue… what have you guys done or did I install this wrong

I just ordered one for mine, so I guess I'll see here in a couple weeks.
Mine will be going on an FE, so not sure if it will a difference of not.

Would a shorter belt help pull it away a little, or is there not enough adjustment for that?

belt tensioner any tighter would cause it to push into the power steering rack. The upper arm has no play. Thought about shortening the top arm

Are you 1000% sure you ordered and then also rvcd the correct one for your appliciation? You sure you got the 4wd appliciation pump and mount bracket? I would not modify ANYTHING until you talk to WH and see what their advice is. If you go to cutting/modifing on it, I am sure that voids any warrenty. Yes that top line coming off and going fwd sure does not look like what you need.

Gotcha - Hopefully they are able to get it sorted out for you.

I think that is one of the returns that gave on their dual return setup. I am going to use that one where it will return back from the cooler, so in my application, it should work out okay.

Well crap. This stuff always happens on a weekend when there's nobody there to ask! And it always seems to be the stuff I'm not familar enough with to offer a good solution/reason right off the bat.
But I'll ask some questions for starters.
Do the puleys/belts line up? If so, then it's only the clearance around the pump and tubes that is in question?
What year truck, and which engine?
Any differences, such as yours came with A/C or not?
Anything else you can think of?

Reason for the questions is just in case this is something new, where during testing we missed something that might cause trouble with one pump, rather than another for the same application.
Anyway, sorry you're running into this hassle. Always on a weekend when you had just enough time to get it half done! Definitely give us a call on Monday. Early as you please, depending on where you are, or course.
Hopefully someone in the office can give you more help than I can from here. Don't know all the ins-and-outs of this kit for your particular application.
Or better yet, send in that pic to sales@wildhorses4x4.com and someone (probably Matt) will get the information-ball rolling as quickly as possible.
I don't know if it's still current, but between travel to the Super Celebration and other events, Jim (who's the main tech/info/guru on this kind of thing) is traveling for distant events, and planning for our own Roundup in two weeks.
But someone should still be able to offer some hope.
And Rich gives good advice. No cutting and pasting just yet! Not that it looks like there's really anything you can do to avoid your close quarters in that corner. But just in case you were thinking along those lines...
Good luck. Hopefully we can make sense of the fitment. But if the pulleys align, that's your cue that things are set up properly at least as far as the pump depth is concerned.
Thanks for any further information you can provide.

Paul

Ill give em a ring on Monday morning but ill lets answer your questions now to see if we can solve it.
Belt and pulleys line up
1977 f150 4x4 with a 351m
Truck didnt come with AC.
Everything else is stock on the truck. I do notice this pump comes out a lot further than the stock pump

No worries, im sure it can be worked out. I am up in Canada making it a bit of a pain to get the product across the border right now (we wont get started) Hopefully we can just make this one work. It seems like it should.

Seems like he may have trimmed up his metal return line. That might just solve my problem. I could tighten the belt tensioner significantly and probably make enough space

Were you able to get in touch with Wild Horse and work any of this out?
Just curious, as I have one of these units that just showed up to the house and I will be working on it next week, when I get back home.

Just being the squeaky wheel... I need some grease baby!!! LOL

Did you get a favorable response from Wild Horses?
Or did you figure it out on your own?

Ha somehow I missed your message sorry.
i got a response of “you can bend that hose slowly to get it into place and then use a rubber hose”
So I trimmed the return hose on the truck back and bend the pump one a bit and things seems to fit pretty good. I got a longer belt so the pump now adjusts further away.

filled it with fluid this morning and my steering gear that I rebuilt leaked badly don’t know where to go now as I was gearing up to have it back on the road in a month and I don’t want to spend the hundreds it’s gonna cost to fix. Guess I have no choice

So is it leaking out the the botton where the sector shafts comes out? Even though you have all new seals in that area. About the only true "repair" is time to get a Red Head or Blue Top steering box.

Red Head. https://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/aboutprocess

I believe the process to fix that leaking area is a step they do. "Machining out the housings and installing needle bearings".

Glad they responded and you were able to get it sorted out.
That really sucks on the steering gear. I ended up going the Red Head route a few years back when I had the funds for it. Hopefully it works well once I get the truck n the road.
I know it is a tough pill to swallow, but it should be one of the worthwhile investments.

I dropped it off at a local shop yesterday for a full rebuild. Shocked that there is still a shop around that is dedicated to just steering gears.
Full rebuild including sandblasting and painting is $395 CAD so it was kinda a no brainer to me. All 5 star good reviews on online
I can pick it up Tuesday and then its done and with a warranty

Also when I took it off I realized the leak was coming from higher up and I am pretty sure it was just a simple O ring I messed up but whatever. Never felt confident in the job I did anyway this will give me peace of mind
