We will be traveling through Dearborn in June plan to tour Greenfield or the Henry Ford museum. Anybody have any recommendations we just have one full day there. We are staying about three miles from that area at a Hampton Inn near the Ford industrial complex.
piquette plant museum - Search I highly recommend this. It was the plant where the first 10,000 or so model T's were built. It was like stepping back in time. Was the highlight of our trip.
I went thru both 45 years ago when in my 20s. Both were great. Would do again if was close. They suggest 2 days to see it, I did in one day but had to keep moving. Take alot of pictures. Have fun.
I have never been to it. But a good friend of mine after visiting the Henry Ford Museum went to Fords Garage in Dearborn. It's a restaurant, bar, and it sounds like a museum all rolled up in one.If I recall he ordered a hamburger and the Ford script logo was branded into the bun. He said it was great!
I was there years ago while working on a masters degree program. We had access to many areas that are not available to the general public so my recollections may be different than others. We went through the catalytic convertor lab where the director showed us a device that she said would scrub enough contaminants out of the air that would qualify the car it was installed on to be categorized as an air filter. Lots of great exhibits...just don't be rushed, there's alot to take in.
Like others have mentioned above, I would lean more toward the Museum than Greenfield Village, but both are terrific. The last time I was in the Village they had a set-up where you could be driven around the Village in a Model T. (Sorry, no option to do the driving!) One of the neatest things about the Village is that most of the "service trucks" are actual Ford trucks from the 30's. Dump trucks etc. They are not intended as part of the "visitor experience" per se, the trucks are working, so you sort of have to look for them.. If you have any interest at all in trains, the roundhouse part of the Village is a must.
OK so I am recommending the Museum and then I go on and on about the Village. Just goes to show they are both great. Anyway that you can alter your schedule ?
I have done and thoroughly enjoyed The Museum, The Village, Piquette, and Gilmore. All are a must if you are into these things. If your interest bend that way, the Kalamazoo Air Zoo is another to add to the list. Of course, it could take a good part of a week to take all those in properly!
