1980 B-Series Serial Decode
I was perusing some archived listings of buses previously for sale by the State of North Carolina and came across some 1980 B-Series serials that I have been unable to find any information on.
The serials are as follows:
J75NVJH1639
J75NVJH1668
So far I've been able to work out they were produced at the Kentucky Truck plant (surprising, I know) and that's about as far as I've gotten.
I've seen B70, B71, & J70 before, but never 'J75', nor have I seen 'N' for the engine.
Any help would be appreciated, I'd love to learn more about the pre-VIN era!
Thanks!
J75NVJH1639/1668
J75 = B700 diesel, cowl model (no windshield, just a firewall and maybe a dash or part of one)--starting model year 1987. But it can't be an '87 with an 11 digit VIN. 1980 is the last year of the 11 digit VIN. '81 on is 17 digit with a different format.
If this is a 1980, it should be:
J70 = B700 diesel, cowl model.
N = Detroit DDA 990N OR 990T 501 CID V8 diesel engine
V = Kentucky Truck Plant
JH1639 & JH1668 = serial number, but the Master Parts Catalog shows a "JH___" as being a 1981. Given the change to 17 digit VIN for '81, I'm not sure how that happens.
It could be there was a bit of mixing things in '81, but I would think that odd given the nature of the DOT and other Federal Rules regarding motor vehicles.
