92 explorer 4.0

Hi,
The problem that I am having with this is:

1) It will not idle after it warms up, The rpms with vary 1500 to 500 most of the time the motor will just die. I also noticed the charge gage will jump with the rpm gage. If I am in the explorer at the time this is happening I can keep it running by keeping the rpms up. It will surge like this for 3-4 times then be ok for a couple of minutes then start surging again.

2) Hard starting warm. If it sits over nite or right after shutoff it fires right away. But if I wait 10 -15 min while warm it has trouble starting.

Sorry if this is a repeat but I got a error while trying search.

Thanks for any help
If you need more info let me know

Thanks
Rick

It sounds like you IAC valve is sticking. it allows air to bypass the throttle body, and is controled by the PCM. If you search in this forum you will find a post that tells you how to clean it.

Thanks for the reply
I am going to try to clean it this weekend.
The search worked this time, The 1st time I tried the search I wasn't a member so I think that might of been the problem.

Thanks
Rick

Update on valve cleaning

Cleaned the valve over the weekend. The explorer seems to idle better until the time I put it in gear, then I get the surging a couple of times then its ok.
There is a strong gas smell and there's is a black carbon patch from the exhaust on the driveway
The gas smell was there before forgot to type that the last time.

Should I just replace the valve? Any other ideas?

Thanks
rick

Strong gas smell from the exhaust often means that engine doesn't burn all the fuel. So the excess fuel goes to the exhaust. Do you have a catalyst on your car? If yes, there will be trouble.

Anyway, I'd check the MAF sensor. Try to disconnect MAF sensor's harness terminal when engine is idling. If nothing changes, MAF sensor is not working of properly.

And, what MPG's does your car have now? If it consumes more fuel than usual, MAF sensor and o2 sensor are subjects to check.

With best regards,
Yuri,

Another thing to check would be fuel pressure. If the pressure is too high, the engine will run rich. If the FPR diaphragm is ruptured, it will allow excess fuel into the intake.

I changed out the IAC valve today and it seems to run worst.
Here are the things that I noticed.
at cold startup it starts good. If I let it warm up for 5 min it will be idling good but with a gas smell as soon as I step on the gas the rpms will start surging and will act like it isn't running on all cylinders for a couple of min then it clears up.
and at times will almost kill, there is also black sootish stuff coming from the exhaust (leaves a patch on the driveway).
While driving is seems fine but as soon as I let off the gas to stop it wants too kill, or the rpms will jump up and it will want to lunge foward.
It also has a rotten egg smell coming from the exhaust.
Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help so far,
Rick

Check the FPR

On the vacuum tree there is a vacuum line that runs to fuel pressure regulator. Wait till the engine is running and pull this hose off. Engine should continue to run. Look for the presence of gas in the line. Let it run this way at least a couple of minutes to be sure. Your symptoms are consistant with a fuel leak.

If the FPR isn't leaking then I would look to an injector leaking. An examination of the plugs could help. This all assumes that the ignition system is in decent condition. Some problems with the FPR are difficult to diagnose because they are intermitant. Sometimes you need to take a chance and just replace it for $80.

Ok ,
I just checked thr FPR I think. I disconnected the vacuum line thats goes around the back of the engine then down . The vacuum line hooks to a metal tube that is about 1/4 inch OD.
I didn't see any signs of gas leaking from the tube, the explorer ran better with this tude disconnected if that matters.
When I look at the plugs Do I look for one that is wet? or badly carboned up?

Thanks
Rick

I don't have my Explorer with me, and it's hard to tell from a short written description, but that sounds to me like the vacuum line going to the transmission modulator. The fuel pressure regulator is attached to the fuel rail. If you find the Schraeder valve (on mine it's on the passenger side of the fuel rail, underneath the upper intake manifold). The FPR vacuum line runs along the fuel rail to the FPR at the front end of the fuel rail.

I had a couple of minutes so I went out and checked on it again. This time I checked towards the front of the motor passenger side
found a vacuum line between the oil fill and intake I dis connected it and had gas coming out while running. There was 1 vacuum line and 1 braded line hooked to it as fas as I could tell
Is this the FPR?

Thanks
Rick

That is the FPR, and if that vacuum line has gasoline in it, that means that the diaphragm in the FPR has ruptured, and you need a new FPR.
