have a 2.7 ecoboost, 130,000 #3 cylinder misfire, loosing coolant and blowing white smoke and rough idle.
back-story truck water pump went out and was replaced. When water pump went out motor did get hot but never over heated or got to red line.
water pump replaced and 1-2 weeks later started loosing coolant and some white smoke in AM when engine was cold. Coolant progressed to consume more and more. White smoke increased, misfire code came on and truck started running rough.
took to 2 shops and #3 cylinder was scoped and visualized coolant leaking past head.
been trying to research and read up, concerned if I can resurface heads?
can you replace the heads or better yet should I incase there is a crack somewhere.
has anyone else had this issue? Truck is out of warranty.
Pull it. Take off your accessories and swap it for a remanufactured unit. Make sure your turbos are in good shape. Re and re. Make sure you pick a quality company to buy from. That's the move I would take. Or trade it at the dealership broken. And just let them fix it and flip it.
That’s probably the best advice. Sadly, getting it torn down enough to remove the head is actually complicated surgery. And since you went that far, you would want to do bath sides, the timing chain, water pump, etc. Since you have 130k already, the best option is to swap in a remanufactured, or low mile used engine. It will actually be cheaper too.
Trading is an option too. Dealers will fix it at their cost for much less than what they would charge you, or just send it to auction.
Not sure if the engines are built similar or not but had the exact same thing happen on my wife's 2017 Escape eco boost at about 65K miles. After some research by my local mechanic I called the local Ford dealer. I didn't get very far into my explanation of what was wrong and he said he knows exactly what's wrong. He had a name for the problem which escapes me now but he said the fix was a new engine. In my case it would have been $7,000 installed. But then you're just installing the same thing.
So instead we found a Ranger we liked and traded the Escape to that dealer. They had it on the lot for maybe three days before it sold.
